At Fairfield Equine, we proudly offer emergency and elective surgical services at our Newtown, CT location. Our team of veterinary surgeons and support staff are deeply committed to providing unparalleled, around-the-clock care to our patients at the highest level.
Horses presented to Fairfield Equine for surgery receive a thorough evaluation in collaboration with their care team to develop a customized plan and approach for each case.
We strive to fulfill the individual needs of every patient and foster a collaborative approach to involve owners and referring veterinarians with open lines of communication. As a client at Fairfield Equine, you can rest assured, knowing that your horse will receive compassionate care provided by an exceptionally dedicated group.
Our spacious operating suite is equipped with an equine surgical table, LED-surgery lights, and advanced instrumentation for an array of orthopedic and soft-tissue procedures to be performed under general anesthesia, and surgical stocks are available to perform standing procedures with local anesthetic and intravenous sedation – including laparoscopic procedures.
Anesthetized patients are monitored continuously by our well-trained anesthetists to track oxygenation, arterial blood pressure, and cardiac electrical activity. We are one of only a few equine hospitals in the US using the state-of-the-art Tafonius anesthesia machine to provide an advanced degree of ventilatory support to accommodate patients of all sizes.
Following completion of the surgical procedure, patients are transferred to one of two padded recovery stalls, where they receive continued monitoring until the patient is deemed stable for assisted recovery with head and tail ropes.
Postoperatively, we take every precaution to ensure your horse is comfortable and feels as if they are in their home environment. As your horse is discharged back to your care, we will provide you with detailed instructions outlining any medications, bandages, or exercises that need to be carried out at home.
Additionally, we have 24/7 support to help answer any questions or concerns.
A variety of other procedures are sometimes deemed necessary depending on the nature and location of urgency. Our surgeons are on call with our associate veterinarians 24/7 to consult on cases both in hospital and in the field.
