On July 12, Dr. Melissa MacKinnon was awarded the AAEP/Frank J. Milne Memorial Award during the Ontario Veterinary College Class of 2008 Convocation Ceremony. The AAEP/Frank J. Milne Memorial Award is named for Dr. Milne, 1971 president of the AAEP and Ontario Veterinary College faculty member from 1953-1984 and is presented to a graduate with proficient skills in large animal surgery.

Dr. MacKinnon grew up in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She was actively involved in the Canadian Pony Club and represented her region at various national finals. In 2003, she achieved her Pony Club A level and obtained her Equine Canada Level 1 English Coach certification. Dr. MacKinnon trained and showed horses on the hunter/jumper circuit, and in her spare time, she enjoys coaching riders and training horses.

During her time at Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, Dr. MacKinnon was involved in the AAEP student chapter, serving as co-president and assisting with organization of lectures and hands-on wet labs.

After her internship, Dr. MacKinnon would like to complete a large animal surgery residency and then return to the Ottawa area and open a referral surgical and lameness practice.
